What the video demonstrates

The recording shows a complete, working chain rather than a static desktop or a partially completed installation: Raspberry Pi hardware runs Dosbian, Dosbian hosts DOSBox ECE, and DOSBox ECE provides the environment in which Windows ME and Dune 2000 operate. The point of the experiment is simple—Windows ME on DOSBox was widely described as impossible or too unstable to be useful, yet this configuration reaches the desktop and runs a real Windows game.

Why run Windows ME in DOSBox ECE?

There is no practical reason to choose Windows ME for current computing, other than people saying it could not be done. It is obsolete, unsupported and should never be exposed to an untrusted network. As a contained retro-computing project, however, it is interesting precisely because it sits outside the normal DOSBox use case. DOSBox is best known for DOS software, while Windows ME expects late-1990s PC hardware and a much broader set of operating-system services.

That makes the exercise interesting as a compatibility experiment. It tests how far an emulated x86 environment can be pushed on inexpensive ARM hardware, and it preserves a period-correct way to revisit software that does not fit comfortably on a modern operating system. Performance and limitations

Working does not mean fast. The recorded system takes a long time to load, and the Dune 2000 cut-scenes are visibly slow and the graphics are stretched. Every instruction passes through emulation, so delays are expected.

The result should therefore be read as a proof of concept, not a benchmark and not a guarantee that every Windows ME application, driver or peripheral will behave correctly. Stability here means that the demonstrated workload completed without a crash during the session. It does not turn an unsupported guest operating system into a supported DOSBox platform.

Can you reproduce this setup?

Yes, in principle, but approach it as a preservation project. You need legally obtained installation media and licences for Windows ME and any commercial games, plus a DOSBox ECE and Dosbian configuration compatible with the software shown. Keep the guest isolated, take a backup of the virtual disk before changing drivers or settings, and expect installation and boot cycles to be slow.

This article deliberately documents the verified result rather than inventing a universal installation recipe. DOSBox builds, Raspberry Pi images and available packages change over time, while Windows ME setup can be sensitive to virtual hardware choices. The takeaway

Windows ME on DOSBox ECE is neither a sensible nor a polished Raspberry Pi experience. It is, however, possible. For retro-computing enthusiasts, sometimes that is reason enough to try.
