Kiteworks’ Reopening Needs a Local Recovery Record

Update, 29 September 2026: The notice effective 27 September permits restarts; the provider’s hosted service has recovered. Customers operating Advanced Forms themselves must consult Support. That instruction does not identify every such deployment as vulnerable.

Reliable federal intelligence prompted hosted shutdowns and similar advice for self-managed customers. Its 28 September statement describes a newly discovered weakness rated critical in an optional function switched on for under 1% of clients. The flaw was repaired in the offline window, with extra protection for every deployment; remaining products were not affected.

The vendor reports an incident-free window, monitoring that detected nothing irregular, and nothing suggesting its own or customers’ installations were breached or the weakness abused. That statement does not identify the capability, mechanism, CVE, affected range, fixed build or indicators.

Six hours was the early account, not today’s instruction

The Recorded Future News and BleepingComputer reports said six hours, informing our original headline. The vendor advisory says nine hours in each customer’s local time zone. The reviewed accounts do not resolve this historical discrepancy.

The pre-discovery claim that 9.5.1 had resolved all recognised weaknesses does not prove the newly discovered remediation reached every installation. Through authenticated support, confirm the applicable fix and additional safeguards, installation time and evidence; retain the response with the change record. No guessed builds or cross-deployment assumptions.

Keep a local recovery record

The NCSC’s general technical-response guidance supports log availability, account and network analysis, supplier coordination and checking remediation before recovery. This general methodology does not investigate this event. BlackTree’s application is:

  • Retain platform, operating-system, authentication, proxy and network logs from before the warning through isolation and return to service.
  • Review unusual administrative sessions, account changes, transfer jobs, configuration exports and outbound connections.
  • The vendor assurance is not local forensic clearance. Watch for incident-specific technical updates that could change investigation and validation.

Our GoAnywhere MFT report concerns a different permission flaw that let an authorised user leave an assigned folder. File-transfer services concentrate sensitive data, identities and trusted connections. Revised supplier instructions need a revised response, not conflated products or evidence.
