Splunk Patches Command Path
Splunk has patched Enterprise against CVE-2026-76268, rated critical at 9.8 under CVSS 3.1. An attacker who can reach a search-head member’s Patroni REST API can run commands without credentials because sensitive configuration changes were not authenticated.
Match the exact branch
Upgrade the 10.4 branch to 10.4.3, or 10.2 to 10.2.7. The advisory excludes 10.0.x and 9.4.x from this vulnerability, not from every flaw in the batch.
Reduce reachability while patching
BlackTree recommends:
- Inventory the cluster. Record both routine administration routes and unexpected paths to each member. Ask the service owner to validate the inventory.
- Prioritise broad access. Treat internet-facing, cross-zone and widely reachable management paths as the first remediation targets.
- Install the applicable fixed build. Verify the running version after the change instead of relying only on an orchestration report.
- Preserve independent telemetry. Keep host, network and upstream records outside the platform before maintenance, then review unexpected process execution and configuration changes.
Use the fallback carefully
Disable the PostgreSQL sidecar only without Edge Processor, OpAmp or SPL2 pipelines, then restart. Set disabled = true under [postgres] in $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/system/local/server.conf.
BlackTree recommends confirming the dependency decision with the service owner. This temporary measure does not replace an upgrade.
What the evidence does not say
The vendor advisory does not report exploitation. CISA’s catalogue, checked on 19 October, contains no entry for this identifier. Neither observation establishes that attacks have not occurred or that exploit code is unavailable.
Teams should therefore separate two questions: whether the interface was reachable, and whether host-level evidence shows unexpected command execution. A clean application alert view cannot answer both on its own.
